Personal statement

I joined the University of Strathclyde in June 2023 as a Senior Teaching Fellow.

Prior to joining Strathclyde, I taught at Heriot-Watt University as an Assistant (and later Associate) Professor in Chemical & Process Engineering. I served two terms as Senior Programme Director of Studies and led and implemented a review of the undergraduate curriculum. I held a range of roles and responsibilities covering academic leadership, professional body engagement, curriculum development and teaching.

Since 2020 I have been a Visiting Scholar in the School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. I am currently the External Examiner for undergraduate programmes in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield, and the External Examiner for taught programmes in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Brunel University London). I previously served as External Examiner for taught programmes in the Department of Chemical & Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde.

Before moving to academia, I worked in the upstream oil and gas industry for 15 years – latterly with Chevron in Aberdeen, Houston and Luanda; Oil Search in Sydney; and starting my career with Helix RDS in Aberdeen. My career covered a broad range of petroleum engineering, production technology, asset management, project management and capital stewardship roles.

I graduated with MEng Chemical Engineering with Energy Resource Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in 1999, and MSc Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College in 2000.

Professionally, I am a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Petroleum Engineer through the Energy Institute. I am a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers in Scotland; a Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining; a Senior Member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; and an Associate Member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. I currently serve as a degree accreditor with the Energy Institute and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

Teaching

My core teaching comprises process safety-based modules in Years 2, 3 and 5/MSc, and Petroleum Engineering in Year 5/MSc. I also support the delivery of the equivalent modules on our distance learning programmes. I am the co-ordinator for Year 5 industrial projects, and am also a supervisor for Year 4 Design group projects and Year 5 and MSc individual projects.

For teaching leadership, I am the Industrial Advisory Board Co-ordinator and work closely with the Marketing and Outreach team to develop industrial links for our courses.

Reflecting my industrial background, my teaching philosophy focusses on the inclusion and contextualisation of industrially-relevant experiences and outcomes in both taught and project-based modules.
