Personal statement

Catriona was employed in the School of Education as a Teaching Fellow from 2013 to 2015 and returned in 2018. She has worked in primary education in mainstream and Additional Support Needs (ASN) schools as well as in the secondary department of an ASN school. Prior to returning to the university, she worked in an enhanced nurture base. These children had experienced adversity and trauma, which manifested itself as distressed behaviour. She became a Development Officer in Mental Health at a local authority level and then employed as a Teaching Fellow in Children's Mental Health on her return to the university.

Research Interests

Catriona's research interests are in adversity, trauma, nurture and resilience. She is interested in how children and young people displaying distressed behaviour can be supported to develop the social and emotional competences which will allow them to achieve educational and wider outcomes.

Implementing Trauma Informed Practices in the Classroom

This two session Knowledge Exchange training course explores trauma-informed practice in the classroom. It explores the impact of trauma for the person and the practitioner supporting trauma-experienced young people. It explores the presence of trauma for children and young people reviewed through the medical lens and domains of trauma, the importance of self-care and a range of experiential and practical tasks for practitioners working in the field.
