Personal statement
KEY EXPERTISE: MATERIALS DEGRADATION BEHAVIOUR, MATERIALS SELECTION AND CHARACTERISATION Deputy Director of Knowledge Exchange for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Team Lead of the Advanced Materials Research Laboratory (AMRL), Dr Sillars provides technical solutions in materials engineering for a range of industrial customers. Over the years, she has set up and delivered over a hundred projects, including material qualification programmes and failure investigations. Currently, she leads research on the transition to sustainable energies both in relation to wind energy the transition to hydrogen. Funded projects include EPSRC-IAA on Dynamic Loading Distribution on Wind Turbine Yaw System, a Innovate UK, Knowledge Transfer Partnership on Wind Turbine Decommissioning and several SIR- and ETP-funded projects on failure investigation and materials characterisation of wind turbine components. Prior to joining the AMRL, Dr Sillars worked on an EPSRC-funded SUPERGEN Programme in electrochemical energy storage for electric vehicles. From there, she carried out research for Tata Steel through the SPECIFIC project (buildings as power stations) and for the MoD/EPSRC Solar Soldier project (wearable power generation). Dr Sillars was the UK representative for Batteries and Supercapacitors for the European Energy Researchers Alliance (EERA) for Energy Storage.
