Personal statement

Michael Ward is a Professor of Practice at the University of Strathclyde. He works with the university central team, colleagues across the university, industry and other key stakeholders to help build strategic industrial activity for Strathclyde. He has two primary areas of focus: providing strategic technical direction, promoting collaborative research and development activity and securing further funding at the university level; and supporting the Advanced Nuclear Research Centre. Previously as Technical Director – Advanced Forming Research Centre Michael was responsible for technical leadership and development of a research and innovation centre, one of seven within the High Value Manufacturing Catapult network, which grew to a 200+ strong team of researchers, technologists and support staff. Earlier in his career Michael worked for Rolls-Royce, in various roles ending as Chief of Capability Acquisition with responsibility for the global manufacturing technology programme across all business sectors, and acting as functional lead for ~200 practitioners.

Electricity networks research, innovation, skills and testing ecosystem analysis

The project initially set out to identify current Electricity Networks Sector needs and provision in terms of 'centres of excellence' related to research, innovation, skills, supply of key assets and services, and testing so that key gaps in UK provision can be identified.  However, stakeholder engagement indicated that the 'centres of excellence' phraseology and emphasis would prove contentious and unhelpful in onward communication, especially when underpinned by a somewhat subjective assessment framework.  Feedback also indicated that industrial providers of assets and services should be removed from scope, on the basis that they would be more completely addressed by a subsequent supply chain analysis.   The focus of the exercise was therefore redefined towards a more general ecosystem analysis addressing the Electricity Networks Sector Ecosystem based on organisations focused on skills, innovation, training and testing and playing an active role in role in the electricity networks sector, through provision of services which are recognised within the sector, which play an active role in enabling network operators to meet national energy needs.

Maritime Supply Chain Innovation / Development Centre

The maritime sector and its supply chain face a generational opportunity and threat. It has been slow to take up technology and innovation due to specific practical challenges, and now faces unprecedented growth in global demand driven by the development of the green economy. The Scottish and UK supply base needs to develop rapidly to benefit from major opportunities that result from energy transition, renewed focus on national resilience, and decarbonization of shipping. These developments need to mitigate national skills shortages and productivity through technology deployment.
The Maritime Supply Chain Innovation Centre directly tackles main problem of getting maritime SMES and suppliers to engage with innovation and technology deployment. It will provide direct support to the maritime supply chain by providing a cost-effective innovation and technology deployment approach. This is made possible by utilizing the value of available land (currently owned by Malin) as the basis of a revenue stream that will fund operational expenditure for a new kind of innovation provider which works on a purely cooperative and altruistic basis. It recognizes the need to contribute to the skills challenge through provision of an experiential learning environment which complements existing mechanisms for skills provision. This will underpin new thinking on heavy engineering on the Clyde, which is necessary to support Scotland’s economic gain from the journey to net zero.
