Strathclyde SportUniversity of Strathclyde launch first rUK Sport Scholarship

The University of Strathclyde has added to its 2019/20 Performance Sport Scholar programme with Rugby Union player George Breese becoming the first student to be recruited on an rUK Sport Scholarship.

A BA Business student, George will become the first sport scholar to receive a financial bursary direct from their faculty, with Strathclyde Business School funding his £1,500 scholarship.

The programme aims to provide academic flexibility, and provision of pastoral care, world-class sports science and medical support, and financial assistance towards training and competition costs.

Strathclyde Sport’s collaboration with the Business School in formulating this competitive scholarship package looks to help the University achieve its target of increasing the number of rUK students.

“I’m studying Business which includes a wide range of interesting modules and topics, and I’m grateful that the scholarship can aid me with my studies alongside my busy rugby schedule."

Originally from Yorkshire, George was named a member of the Fosroc Scottish Rugby Academy earlier this year and is involved in the Scottish Rugby age-grade system.

His inclusion sees the University of Strathclyde’s Sport Scholarship programme reach 45 students, the most ever supported.

When not representing the University’s men’s rugby side in BUCS, Breese will play club rugby for Stirling County.

George Breese said: “The support from Strathclyde so far has been superb and I’m really enjoying my rugby at the University.

“I’m studying Business which includes a wide range of interesting modules and topics, and I’m grateful that the scholarship can aid me with my studies alongside my busy rugby schedule.

“I’m hoping to progress onto a semi-pro contract in the next few years and after the dream is to become a full professional.”
