National Apprenticeship Week Blog Kara Black

Kara Black - NHSGGC

I left school and started working for the NHS straight away, moving between different administrative roles. I knew I always wanted to study towards a degree, however I did not know there was a route that supported working full-time and studying in a full-time capacity also. I then came across the University of Strathclyde Business Management Graduate Apprenticeship seemed like the perfect combination of academic study and workplace learning.

Since joining the programme in 2021, I have learned various new skills, such as critical and academic writing, presentation skills, collaborative working, the importance of culture and innovation in the workplace and the different components of aspects of business. I particularly found studying culture, innovation, and performance in the workplace interesting, as it was a real-life example, I experience in the workplace daily on how employees are feeling and are treated, which impacts their performance and the culture of the working environment. I always try to ensure that I am always contributing positively to the workplace culture.

I have successfully obtained two promotions since starting my GA and  I believe that the skills I have learned throughout the course have supported me in obtaining the promotions.

I can demonstrate to current and future employers the mutual benefits the GA programme has for both me and my team. In terms of the next steps for my career, I think the GA programme will continue to support securing more senior positions as it not only demonstrates the academic level I am studying at but also the self-discipline and determination I have to further my skills for the workplace.

I think studying in the GA programme, alongside working allows students to apply their learning and knowledge in real-time, and it has helped me also build my confidence in the workplace. The support that is provided to the students from the programme is outstanding, and it really feels like every lecturer and advisor wants you to succeed. I would definitely recommend the programme to anyone considering the course, my career has benefitted tenfold.
