Strathclyde GA wins Scottish Apprentice of the Year
Samir Khan-Young, Manufacturing Engineer at Thales, was crowned Graduate Apprentice of the Year and also scooped overall Scottish Apprentice of the Year at 2021 Scottish Apprenticeship Awards.
The virtual awards, held during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, saw recognition for apprentices, employers and providers across Scotland and the whole apprenticeship family of Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships.
Samir was delighted to win in his nominated category of Graduate Apprentice of the Year and stunned when Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Fair Work and Culture, announced his win as Scottish Apprentice of the Year.
Samir said:
I’m delighted and want to thank everybody who has helped me along the way. It’s not just saying that I’ve done something good, but is a credit to everybody at Thales and to the University of Strathclyde and reflects all the fantastic support I’ve had.
This is just the beginning for me. I left school to work at 17 and the Graduate Apprenticeship has opened up new doors. I can look at going into Design Engineering or management, opportunities that weren’t there before.
This also marks a third consecutive win of GA of the Year for an apprentice studying at Strathclyde on the Engineering: Design & Manufacture programme. This four-year work based BEng(Hons) programme offers employees the opportunity to study for their degree whilst remaining in the workplace, applying their learning straight back into the day job. Samir has excellent in his studies as much as he has in his role with Thales and you can find our more about Samir in his GA Case Study.
Congratulations Samir on your well deserved recognition!
