After spending several years working in a community library, Bethan Notley knew she wanted to pursue a career in Speech and Language Therapy. However, returning to higher education after a difficult university experience left her uncertain about taking the next step.

Having completed an undergraduate degree in 2018, Bethan had been out of education for seven years when she enrolled on the University of Strathclyde's Pre-entry Access Course. Looking for a flexible option that would allow her to continue working while studying, she was drawn to the course's structure and relevant subject areas.

"I wanted to build my confidence and find out whether returning to education was the right choice for me." 

Like many mature students, Bethan had concerns about balancing study with work and questioned whether she would be able to keep pace with academic demands after such a long break. Previous challenges with her mental health and the social aspects of university had also affected her confidence.

Despite her initial hesitation about applying, Bethan decided the course would be worthwhile regardless of whether university became her final destination.

"Even if I didn't continue on to University, I thought it would be a great opportunity to challenge myself and rediscover my love of learning."

Throughout the course, Bethan found a supportive learning environment that helped her overcome many of the concerns she had about returning to study. She received guidance from a disability adviser and was provided with adjustments that enabled her to succeed academically and manage anxiety.

"The support I received was fantastic. Knowing that accommodations were available gave me the confidence I needed and really helped me thrive."

Bethan also praised the teaching team, describing tutors as knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate about their subjects.

"Their enthusiasm encouraged me to engage more deeply with the course and motivated me to continue learning outside of class."

The experience proved transformative, significantly improving her confidence and helping her develop a more positive view of her abilities.

"The access course changed how I see myself. I now believe I can overcome challenges and work hard to achieve my goals."

In addition to developing her academic skills, Bethan received support with the university application process, including navigating UCAS applications. She has since secured a place on the BSc Speech and Language Therapy programme at Queen Margaret University.

Although she initially worried about changing careers later in life, Bethan has embraced the opportunity.

"I realised that in four years' time I would still be 35 whether I did the degree or not. I'd much rather be 35 and starting a career I'm passionate about, with the opportunity to help people."

Reflecting on her achievements, Bethan says she is most proud of completing the course and successfully tackling exams, something she previously found daunting.

"Starting my degree means the world to me. I'm incredibly grateful for my time on Strathclyde's Pre-entry Access Course and for all the support I received along the way."
