English Language TeachingSupport for English for Academic Study (SEAS)

All students on a Strathclyde degree programme who’d like to work on their academic English skills can follow the online self-study SEAS materials on Myplace Support for English for Academic Study (SEAS).

What does Support for English for Academic Study (SEAS) offer?

The Support for English for Academic Study (SEAS) self-study sessions are designed to give students the confidence they need in their academic skills so that they can be successful in their main degree.

The sessions are organised into the key academic English skills of:

  • Reading for Research and Study Skills (RRSS)
  • Written Literacy (WL)
  • Listening Strategies (LS)
  • Oral Communication Strategies (OCS)

The sessions can be completed as standalone sessions, for students to focus on a particular skill, or undertaken as a whole course. For each session, students should work through the tasks as self-study, checking their answers as they go with those provided in the answer sheets.

All the materials you need, including the sessions themselves and the answers, can be downloaded from the Support for English for Academic Study (SEAS) Myplace page.

The sessions cover not only the vocabulary used in academic English but also, for example, the rhetorical functions of the language used, the different genres and texts you will encounter, and the common discourse grammar used to structure spoken and written academic English.

You will use academic sources such as academic journal research articles from your main degree disciplines. You will learn how to critically evaluate these articles as well as learn to identify and use common academic language found in academic texts.

The sessions will also raise your understanding of the expectations of scholarship in a UK university, such as in extended academic writing. This means writing in your own words and correctly referencing the work of others that you have used. You will therefore learn about plagiarism and how to avoid this by using other people's work appropriately.

An outline of the aims for each session, organised by the skill area, is available as a downloadable PDF in the right-hand side column of this page.
