Optimisation of alginate films for sustainable food packaging applications

Alginate is a sustainable polymer with potential applications in food packaging. The project will optimise alginate films by addition of plasticisers and filler particles. Simulation will gain insight into the molecular interactions and experiment will investigate film properties and performance.

Improving purity of crystalline pharmaceutical products using advanced nano-tomography techniques

Filtration and washing of pharmaceutical products is classically undertaken empirically. This project will use nano-computed tomography (nano-CT), a high-resolution cross-sectional imaging technique to track the progress of washing at high resolution in real time.

The birth of crystals: new understanding of nucleation by localised triggering and direct measurement

We will develop an innovative technique to study crystal nucleation, using an optical tweezer to generate a localized shear flow in a crystallizing solution, thus triggering nucleation in a known position enabling direct measurement of the growing nucleus.

EPSRC Industrial CASE Studentship: Quality control for hydrogen fuel cell and electrolyser electrodes
