Project Details
Since September 2022, Harrington and Ferguson have been using knowledge exchange, community action and academic research to open the conversation between road users in Glasgow’s south side.
Via Strathclyde’s Active Mobility Hub, we propose this inter-disciplinary MRes/MPhil as a way to enhance our understanding of how to create a paradigm shift in how we engage with motor vehicle drivers in research and knowledge exchange. From a road legislation and a health and safety aspect drivers are the ultimate ‘hard to reach’ group. This has created a juxtaposition of vulnerable road users (cyclists) alongside unreachable and powerful road users (motor vehicle drivers) that needs exploring in an inter-disciplinary way.
The supervisory team brings physical activity and health (School of Psychological Sciences and Health) and transport engineering (Civil and Environmental Engineering) together in this fast-moving topical research area.
The MRes/MPhil methods and research question can be flexible to suit the student’s own skills. It may suit someone working in a related area and the project can be adapted to link with their employer. We are particular interested in students with an arts or humanities background.
While the MRes/MPhil is in “Physical Activity for Health”, there will be a strong inter-disciplinary aspect with the longer-term impact being the health benefits of modal shift away from motor vehicles.
