Project details
Rolls-Royce is delighted to sponsor this full-fees scholarship for the 1-year MSc Electronic and Electrical Engineering degree at the University of Strathclyde. This scholarship is specifically designed to support a talented student to develop their skills in FPGA engineering, an area that is richly valued in industry, and where there is high ongoing demand for graduates. Rolls-Royce is looking to further strengthen its capabilities in FPGA engineering, hence there is strong potential for progression to graduate employment with the company on successful conclusion of the degree course.
The student will study 180 credits across the year, 120 from taught modules (September – May), followed by a 60-credit individual project (May – August), which will be on an FPGA theme, and completed in close collaboration with Rolls-Royce (either on-site at Rolls-Royce, or on campus at Strathclyde, by arrangement).
The curriculum is therefore composed of:
- FPGA Design for DSP and Communications (20 credits)
- Digital Signal Processing Principles (20 credits)
- Information Transmission and Security (20 credits)
- Assignment and Professional Studies (20 credits)
- Optional taught modules (2 x 20 credits)
- MSc project – on an FPGA theme (60 credits)

Please note that some of the modules listed as ‘optional’ for the MSc degree course in EEE are specifically prescribed for the recipient of this scholarship. Any exceptions will only be considered on the basis of prior study (e.g. already having covered the module content via a previous degree course).
How to apply
To apply for this scholarship, you must first apply for entry to the MSc Electronic and Electrical Engineering course.
To apply for the Rolls-Royce full-fees scholarship, please send your CV and a covering letter (to include a personal statement outlining your interest in this FPGA scholarship), to eng-scholarships@strath.ac.uk.
Following the deadline, a selection panel will assess the applications and decide on a shortlist. The initial assessment will take two primary factors into consideration:
- Academic merit and wider achievements.
- Personal statement, which should evidence your interest in FPGAs and the work of Rolls-Royce.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview, which will take place on Wednesday 12th August. A final decision will be communicated to all candidates by Friday 14th August.

Terms and Conditions
The following terms and conditions apply:
- the decision of the selection panel is final.
- the scholarship is for the individual named on the application only, and cannot be transferred.
- the scholarship funding will be paid directly to the University and will cover full tuition fees. The University will provide the successful scholar with a £450 budget for books and other materials to support their studies on the course. The scholar would be expected to fund their own living expenses.
- the scholar will be expected to take part in promotional activities around the scholarship, including a personal profile and photography. The information provided will be used by the University of Strathclyde and Rolls-Royce only for the purposes of promoting the scholarship.
- the scholar will be expected to act as a positive role model for Rolls Royce at all times.
- the scholar will be expected to graduate in person (normally in late October / early November following completion of the course) to receive their degree award.
- the scholarship is offered for course commencement in September 2026 only. Deferment will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.
- the scholar will be expected to engage with a Rolls-Royce engineers from time-to-time, and to provide an update on their academic progress at the end of each semester.
