Using the PGDE to teach in other parts of the UK

The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is the route to gaining qualified teacher status through the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). But what if you would like to teach elsewhere in the UK further down the line?

This guide provides an overview of how to qualify to teach in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland using a PGDE gained in Scotland. It outlines the steps needed to obtain qualified teacher status in each home nation and where to find detailed information on the respective regulatory bodies' websites.

Qualifying to teach in England

The standard mark of accreditation for those looking to teach in England is Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This is awarded by the Teaching Regulation Authority (TRA).

Those with a Scottish PGDE qualification are eligible to apply for QTS.
