Graduate Apprenticeships Showcase highlights job opportunities

Employers from across the Glasgow region highlighted the diverse range of job opportunities available through Graduate Apprenticeships run in partnership with the University of Strathclyde.

More than 500 people attended the Graduate Apprenticeships (GA) Recruitment Showcase, sponsored by JP MorganChase, at the University’s Technology and Innovation Centre on Thursday 30 January.

Graduate Apprenticeships are for those based in Scotland. They are funded by the Scottish Government through the Scottish Funding Council and SAAS and allow companies to develop their workforce by combining the latest academic learning with experience.

The event featured sessions from JP MorganChase, including Q&A discussions with apprentices, tips on applying for roles, and insights into the company’s working environment. Additional talks were delivered by representatives from Leidos offering attendees a comprehensive view of the graduate apprenticeship landscape.

Other companies in attendance included: Arcadis, BAM, Dougall Baillie, FES Support Services, Leonardo, Morgan Stanley and Story Contracting.

Career prospects

Since launching the undergraduate degree apprenticeships in 2017, Strathclyde has delivered the high-quality, full-time, funded undergraduate courses across six disciplines, including Engineering, Business Management, and IT.

Helyn Gould, Deputy Associate Principal, said: “We started the Graduate Apprenticeship Recruitment Showcase to raise awareness and get a more diverse group of young people applying for these fantastic opportunities.

We work with Glasgow City Council and local Developing Young Workforce groups to promote the event to all the schools in Glasgow and the surrounding areas ensuring those who do not have family working in these industries can also attend.

Strathclyde’s Graduate Apprenticeships are structured to combine permanent job roles with academic study, supported by dedicated learning advisors. Apprentices attend campus one day a month, ensuring minimal disruption to their employment while applying new knowledge directly to their roles. This integrated approach not only enhances skills within the industry but also secures long-term career prospects post-graduation.

Unique platform

Lynne Lockier, Vice President and Scottish Apprenticeship Lead at JP MorganChase, said: “The Graduate Apprenticeship Recruitment Showcase has become an invaluable part of our recruitment strategy, providing a unique platform for us to engage directly with enthusiastic and talented students who are eager to embark on their careers while continuing their education.

This direct interaction allows us to present JPMorganChase as an employer of choice, highlighting our commitment to nurturing young talent and providing them with the skills and experience necessary to thrive in the fast-paced world of software development.

“The University has done an exceptional job in curating an event that not only attracts a diverse pool of candidates but also facilitates meaningful interactions between employers and potential apprentices. This growth has mirrored our own increasing success in recruiting high-calibre candidates who are well-prepared to contribute to our projects from day one.

“We look forward to participating in future showcases and continuing to benefit from the exceptional talent and opportunities this event consistently delivers.”
