The University of Strathclyde’s student support service has achieved LGBT Youth Gold Charter Status.
LGBT Youth Scotland has conferred the status on the University’s Student Experience Directorate, in recognition of its exemplary work in developing inclusive policy and practice.
Culture of respect
The Charter reflects Strathclyde’s commitment to equality of opportunity in its learning, teaching, research and working environments, and to ensuring these environments support positive relations and a culture of respect.
These commitments are enshrined in the University’s Safe360° safeguarding framework, which consolidates national guidance with Strathclyde’s own policies and procedures.
Student Experience Deputy Director Dr Steph McKendry said: “Led by the Access, Equality and Inclusion Service, our LGBT Champions Group have undertaken the 18-month charter process to review and enhance the support we provide for our LGBTQ+ staff and students.
We are proud to have achieved Gold status and believe it sends a strong signal of our commitment to inclusion for all.
The LGBT Youth Gold Charter is designed to support institutions in proactively including LGBTQ+ people in every aspect of their work, protecting their staff and providing high quality service to their learners.
Strathclyde’s submission for Gold Charter Status had a particular focus on the University’s Careers and Employability Service (CES) and its inclusive approach. For example, CES employed a Student Project Officer to conduct research into best practice in supporting LGBTQ+ students. Their findings have been adapted into specific webpages.
