University of Strathclyde awarded Race Equality Charter Bronze status

The University of Strathclyde has received the Race Equality Charter Bronze Award in recognition of its work to advance race equality and embed anti-racist practice.

Presented by AdvanceHE, the award acknowledges the actions Strathclyde has taken and will take over the next five years, including institution‑wide anti‑racism training, senior leadership accountability for race equality, stronger support and reporting mechanisms for students and staff, work to address ethnicity‑related awarding gaps, and initiatives to embed inclusive and decolonised approaches to teaching.

Strathclyde’s work extends beyond its campus, with the University playing a national leadership role through hosting Scotland’s Anti‑Racism Observatory and supporting refugee and asylum‑seeker communities as a University of Sanctuary.

Dignity and respect

Professor Stephen McArthur, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, said: “We want Strathclyde to be a place where everyone feels welcome, is treated with dignity and respect, and has the opportunity to thrive.

“This award recognises both the progress we have made and our determination to tackle racism wherever it exists. It is also recognition of the longer-term work set out in our Race Equality Action Plan, which will continue to drive change across the University.”

Dr Elaine Webster, Chair of Strathclyde’s Race Equality Steering Group, said: “The diversity of the University community today, including our partners and local communities, means proactively working for race equality remains as important as ever.

“The process of applying for the Race Equality Charter (REC) Award offered a unique opportunity to step back and evaluate the progress that we have made and the priorities for the coming years. It has been a really worthwhile process and I’m delighted that the University has achieved its first REC Award.”

Inclusive environment

Oshione Musa, Vice President of Inclusion at Strath Union, said: “The Race Equality Charter Bronze Award is an important recognition of the work being undertaken across Strathclyde to address racial inequalities and create a more inclusive environment for students and staff.

“While there is still more work to be done, this award represents a meaningful step towards lasting institutional change and a stronger culture of equity, representation and belonging across the University community.”

Anne Mwangi, Advance HE's Head of the Race Equality Charter, said: “Congratulations to the University of Strathclyde on this award. The Race Equality Charter Bronze award is recognition of an institution’s robust foundation for eliminating racial inequalities, developing inclusive cultures and moving from commitment to sustainable and integrated bold and ambitious action.

“Advance HE looks forward to supporting the University as it progresses its action plans to advance race equality.”
