You have a number of rights under data protection legislation, these are explained briefly below.

Right to be informed

You have the right to be informed about the collection and use of your personal data. This is normally communicated via a privacy notice.

The University has some central privacy notices for:

  • staff
  • students
  • alumni
  • website

If the processing of your personal data is not covered by one of the University’s central privacy notices you may receive an additional one.

Right of access

You have the right to request confirmation that your data is being processed and access to your personal data. For details on how to make a request please see our right of access page.

Right to rectification

You have the right to request rectification of inaccurate personal data. In certain circumstances we can refuse a request for rectification.

Right to erasure

You have the right to request the deletion or removal of personal data where there is no compelling reason for its continued processing. This is not an absolute right and only applies in specific circumstances.

Right to restrict processing

You have the right to ‘block’ or suppress processing of your personal data if you believe it is in inaccurate, the processing is unlawful and in other limited circumstances.

Right to data portability

You have the right to receive personal data you have provided to the University in a structured, commonly used and machine readable format. It also gives you the right to request the University transmits this data directly to another controller.

Right to object

You have the right to object to:

  • processing based on legitimate interests or the performance of a task in the public interest/exercise of official authority;
  • direct marketing; and
  • processing for purposes of scientific/historical research and statistics
