British Council Early Career Fellowships 2026Tomorrow’s Talent Today - Education for Sustainable Development with Jordan
The International Science Partnerships Fund is designed to enable potential and foster prosperity. It puts research and innovation at the heart of our international relationships, supporting UK researchers and innovators to work with peers around the world on the major themes of our time: planet, health, tech, and talent.
The fund is managed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and delivered by a consortium of the UK’s leading research and innovation bodies, which include UK Research and Innovation (comprising the seven research councils, Innovate UK and Research England), the UK Academies, the British Council, the Met Office, the National Physical Laboratory, the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and Universities UK International.
Early Career Fellowships Programme
The British Council’s ISPF Early Career Fellowships are specifically designed to widen participation and to support the careers of researchers from a variety of backgrounds, including those whose backgrounds are underrepresented in their research field.
The Faculty of Science, the Centre for Sustainable Development and the Organisational & Staff Development Unit at the University of Strathclyde are inviting applications for ‘Investigations into Education for Sustainable Development’, aimed at Jordanian early career researchers (ECRs) working in in the fields of Science and Engineering.
This prestigious fellowship will allow three researchers to spend 12 months at the University of Strathclyde, gaining access to our pedagogical approach to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), industry and third sector networks, and career development opportunities.
Projects are led from the Department of Pure & Applied Chemistry, the Centre for Sustainable Development and the Organisational and Staff Development Unit. ECRs will also have many opportunities to engage with the wider Strathclyde research ecosystem.
- Project 1: Fellow will undertake a mapping activity that will identify the progress our Departments and Faculties are making towards our KPI – ‘all education programmes will have learning outcomes elated to education for sustainable development by 2027.’
- Project 2: Fellow will apply theories of behavioural change to analyse the experience of Strathclyde staff in engaging with sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation in the context of teaching, research and knowledge exchange practices.
- Project 3: Fellow will focus on the role of sustainability in relationships between universities and a range of external stakeholders including government, industry, small/medium enterprises and the third sector.
Applicants to the overall Fellowship are expected to meet the following essential criteria:
- be a permanent resident of Jordan
- be an Early Career Researcher*
- not currently in receipt of financial support or funding towards any other programme in the UK from any other sources
- meet the University's English language requirement
- employees of the British Council, the UK government or Scottish, Welsh, or Northern Irish governments are not eligible to apply for this programme
- agree to maintain contact with the British Council for purposes of monitoring and evaluation during and after their fellowship
Applicants must provide written approval from their university as part of the application, unless they are not currently employed in higher education.
Applicants to the overall Fellowship are also expected to meet the following essential criteria, which will be graded as part of the application process:
- have a background or a proven interest in the selected research project
- be willing to demonstrate future contribution to capacity-building and socio-economic advancement through the benefits achieved after completing the fellowship programme
- demonstrate a plan and a passion to engage other early career researchers from their home country
*Definition of Early Career Researcher (ECR)
Early Career Researchers (ECRs) have completed or are close to completion of their PhD, potentially waiting for their final viva voce examination, which must be passed prior to taking up the award.
ECRs will not have held a permanent academic post or a permanent post with a research-related element, or one which allowed them to supervise PhD students or submit research grants as a principal investigator. Time spent in teaching-only roles or academic related roles does not affect ECR status, provided no research element was part of the role.
If a researcher does not hold a PhD but has research experience equivalent to a PhD holder and works in a field where a PhD is not a prerequisite for established research activity, they can still be considered eligible. Participants from for-profit organisations cannot be funded. As we move toward greater inclusivity for ECRs from a wide range of backgrounds, we are no longer counting years spent in a specific career stage. Career breaks and alternative trajectories to an early academic career are all considered outside the definition of career stage.

Project partners:
The University of Strathclyde has a KPI related to sustainable development – “all education programmes have programme level learning outcomes related to education for sustainable development by 2027 which encompass the integration of the UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development skills and competencies, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and appropriate pedagogical methods”.
This first research area will involve two fellows undertaking a mapping activity that will identify the progress our departments and faculties are making towards this KPI. It will focus on the curriculum and student experience, in particular Strathclyde’s Faculty of Science.
Key research outputs will include educational case studies and examples of good practice of how, at an international technological university, we are developing and nurturing tomorrow’s talent. In other words, the focus will be on how the curriculum supports the development of active citizens, particularly science graduates, who are empowered and competent to address current and future sustainability challenges and opportunities.
These case studies, examples and recommendations will be transferrable to a wide variety of higher education contexts in the UK and the Middle East.
The overarching goal of this research area will be to support future collaboration with Jordanian higher education institutions around embedding Education for Sustainable Development across the curriculum.

The second research area will involve a fellow applying theories of behavioural change to analyse the experience(s) of Strathclyde staff in engaging with sustainability, entrepreneurship and innovation in the context of teaching, research and knowledge exchange practices.
The aim of this research area will be to understand how the voices of staff and students are heard in mainstreaming sustainability, and how to translate findings into holistic, actionable, equitable and inclusive changes across our curriculum, research culture, and external stakeholder relationships.
The research will take a mixed-methods (survey and ethnographic) approach.
Key outputs will include a needs-analysis and recommendations for future staff development activities. These findings will be transferrable from Strathclyde to a wide variety of Higher Education contexts in the UK and Jordan and will sow the seeds of future international collaborative capacity-building work.

Research area three focusses on the role of sustainability in relationships between universities and a range of external stakeholders including government, industry, small/medium enterprises, and the third sector.
Here, the fellows will carry out research that maps Strathclyde’s engagement with external partners in those spaces, particularly through the lens of science. Key questions will include:
- how are concepts of entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainability integrated into educational relationships within the context of sustainable development in science?
- in what ways can our expertise in science education be leveraged to advance the sustainability agenda and enhance the value of external partnerships?
- what specific needs and expectations do our industry, government, and public/private sector partners have regarding the science curriculum to support sustainable development?
The fellows will produce a toolkit to support staff at universities in the UK and Jordan to embed sustainability within stakeholder relationships.
Data will be collected through a mixed methods approach and the toolkit will include key recommendations, case studies and examples of good practice.
