Modern Apprenticeships

At the University of Strathclyde, we work in partnership with employers to deliver Modern Apprenticeships for their staff to help develop new employees or upskill existing ones. As an experienced training provider, we can help to deliver the skills and experience employers are looking for through our Modern Apprenticeship programme.

What is a Modern Apprenticeship?

Modern Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes that allow people to earn an income, while gaining a qualification and on the job experience. Our Modern Apprenticeship programme includes a relevant SVQ, a range of core skills and industry specific training.

The University of Strathclyde can partner with you to deliver Modern Apprenticeships in the following areas:

  • Business and Administration
  • Engineering
  • Digital Applications/Support
  • Horticulture
  • Hospitality
  • Life Sciences

Why should I recruit an apprentice?

Modern Apprenticeships are a great way to help new recruits or existing employees to gain skills and qualifications without having to study full-time and are available in a wide range of occupational areas.

  • Benefits for Employers
  • Improved retention & engagement: Investing in the professional development of employees through apprenticeships can improve employee morale.
  • Enhanced productivity: Apprenticeships can bring in new perspectives and ideas into the workplace, driving innovation and productivity.
  • Tailored Training: Apprenticeships can provide your business with skills specific to your industry and business needs.
  • Cost-Effective Training: With funding support available from Skills Development Scotland, Modern Apprenticeships can offer a cost-effective way to address skill gaps.

What does it involve?

Apprentices must be employed for 30 hours per week and live and work in Scotland for the duration of the programme. To ensure success the apprentice needs to be placed at the heart of the programme and time needs to be made available to enable them to develop their skills over time and complete their qualification.

Modern Apprenticeship Funding

Skills Development Scotland contribute towards training costs of many Modern Apprenticeships. Funding is available for candidates aged 16-19, 20-24 and 25+ (depending on framework and sector). Funding depends on the framework selected as well as the sector the organisation is in. Others will require a contribution from the employer. Skills Development Scotland also make enhanced funding contributions for those with a disability or who are care-experienced, up to and including age 29.
