Postgraduate study

We offer a range of postgraduate study options, including Masters programmes and research degrees (PhD/DBA/MPhil/MRes). We offer three taught postgraduate programmes, our Business Analysis & Consulting course can be studied full-time, part-time and through distance learning, with our Data Analytics course being offered full-time or part-time study, our Operational Research course can be studied through distance learning.

The Business Analysis & Consulting course is designed to take students with a wide variety of first degrees. Although some quantitative analytical tools are taught and used during the course, only basic mathematical knowledge is necessary before starting the course. Many students in this course have first degrees in business, economics, engineering and the social sciences. However, we have students from other backgrounds as well.

The Data Analytics course is designed to create rounded data analytics problem-solvers and focuses on the uses of data analytics techniques within business contexts, making informed decisions about appropriate technology to extract knowledge from data and understanding the theoretical principles by which such technology operates. This course is unique by bringing together essential skills from three departments, Management Science, Mathematics & Statistics, and Computer & Information Sciences (CIS), in order to address the needs of a fast-growing industry.

In comparison, the Operational Research course uses quantitative tools more extensively and therefore requires more mathematical knowledge (more importantly, being comfortable with quantitative approaches is more crucial than your knowledge). Again, many students have first degrees in economics, mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering but students from other backgrounds are also accepted.

Apprenticeship schemes

A vital component of the MSc in Business Analysis & Consulting is the apprenticeship scheme.

Through this scheme, students spend three weeks working full-time on a small analytical project, and many students have the opportunity to be embedded in the analytical function of an external host organisation.

The apprenticeship starts mid-January (one week before second semester starts) and is concluded with all students presenting their work to the department during the third week of the semester.

MSc Business Analysis & Consulting

The programme aims to realise your potential so that you can immediately play an effective role in providing model-based support to managers to help them make better decisions at a strategic level.

Students will develop an understanding of key quantitative business analysis methods in addition to being introduced to models used to support the development of strategy for organisations and enable the monitoring and measurement of strategic processes. Key consulting skills will also be developed in order to effectively support management.
