Department of Marketing - 50th Anniversary
2021-2022 is the Department of Marketing’s 50th Anniversary year. Established in 1971, the Department is widely acknowledged as one of the earliest seats of excellence in the Marketing field within the UK and internationally. We are ranked No.1 in Scotland and No.3 in the UK in the 2022 Complete University Guide.
The Department was founded by Professor Michael Baker, the first Professor of Marketing in the UK appointed to a UGC funded Chair, confirming Marketing as a discipline. Today, we are a vibrant community, offering undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral degrees. Thousands of graduates from the Department have made, and are making, excellent professional contributions in organisations around the world. The same is true of the Department's current and former staff whose contributions to teaching and research continue to shape and deliver the Department’s mission over the past 50 years.
The news of Professor Baker’s death in August came as a great shock as he was involved in the planning of some of our 50th Anniversary activities. This sad news was closely followed by the passing of Professor Stephen Young, another of our highly esteemed academics from the Department. We will pay tributes to these great scholars during our anniversary year.
Looking ahead, the future is promising for our staff and students as we build on the legacy of our enviable, established position as a leading educator for Marketing in Scotland. This reinforces the University’s core mission to be a place of useful learning while continuing to live by our socially progressive values for the benefit of civil society.
