MSci BiochemistryRachel Callan

My name is Rachel Callan and I’m an MSci Biochemistry graduate, after five years of study at Strathclyde.

I was also a Strathclyde Performance Sport Scholar, competing in the 400m hurdles, and benefited from the excellent sports facilities and expert coaching from the Strength & Conditioning team throughout my time at the University.

How did you make the decision to study Biochemistry at Strathclyde?

I chose to study at Strathclyde because of the excellent reputation of the Faculty of Science in university rankings, as well as the University's strong sporting reputation. I chose Biochemistry because I wasn't sure which area of science I wanted to specialise in when applying to university. The flexibility within SIPBS to switch between courses during the first two years meant I could explore different subjects before deciding on the path that suited me best.

What do you like about Biochemistry and Strathclyde?

The variety of knowledge we gained during the first two years was one of my favourite aspects of the course, as it gave me a broad scientific foundation and helped me make an informed decision about my specialism. The laboratory experience in my later years was invaluable, and the independence I gained during my 5th year research project allowed me to experience what a career in academic research could be like.

What has been the most rewarding part of your university experience so far?

The most rewarding part of my time at Strathclyde has been the opportunities I've had both inside and outside the classroom. Completing my research project and seeing my confidence grow as an independent scientist was incredibly fulfilling. At the same time, balancing my studies with being a Performance Sport Scholar taught me resilience, discipline and time management, which are skills I'll carry with me throughout my career.

Which aspects of your course have you found most engaging or beneficial?

I found the practical laboratory work to be the most engaging part of the course. It allowed me to apply the theory from lectures to real scientific research while developing technical skills and critical thinking. My final-year project was particularly beneficial because it gave me the opportunity to design experiments, analyse results and work more independently, providing valuable insight into the research process.

What are your ambitions following graduation, and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

Following graduation, I have been lucky enough to begin a career at Medpace, a drug & biological contract research organisation, working in data management. My degree has given me a strong scientific foundation, extensive data co-ordination/analysis experience and the confidence to tackle new challenges independently. The skills I developed through both my course and the Performance Sport Scholarship have prepared me well for the next stage of my career.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study at Strathclyde?

I would definitely recommend Strathclyde to any prospective students. The course offers a great balance of academic learning and practical experience, and the lecturers are supportive and genuinely want to help students succeed. There are also fantastic opportunities outside of your studies; whether that's through sport, societies or other extracurricular activities, allowing you to make the most of your university experience.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

I'm really grateful for everything Strathclyde has given me over the past five years. The knowledge, experiences and friendships I've gained have shaped both my personal and professional development, and I'm proud to be part of the Strathclyde community.
