ACG members present at virtual Risø Materials Symposium

Materials and Design for Next Generation Wind Turbine Blades

A cohort of ACG members, led by Prof Jim Thomason, attended and presented their research at the 41st Risø International Symposium on Materials Science, the topic of which was Materials and Design for Next Generation Wind Turbine Blades. Originally planned to be held at the DTU Risø campus, 40 km west of Copenhagen, the conference was changed to an online only virtual event, due to the ongoing uncertainties with the COVID-19 pandemic. A full and varied academic programme including sessions on Manufacturing, Leading edge, Interface, Sustainability and Recycling and more was presented from 7-10th September 2020.

The entire organising team at DTU are to be wholeheartedly commended for their work, in the face of unique and challenging circumstances. Through well-planned and effective use of the available online technology they put on an engaging virtual event with no major technical issues. The virtual nature of the conference also netted a significant saving in CO2 emissions: by avoiding air travel the 100 attendees saved a volume of CO2 roughly equal to the annual emissions of 6 EU citizens.
