New PhD students join ACG

Four new students begin their research with us in autumn 2017

We are very pleased to welcome four new PhD students to the ACG this autumn. Senior Lecturer Dr Liu Yang takes on three of these students: Ashlee Espinoza, Mariusz Kucharek and Simona Mazzone, while David Bryce will be supervised by Prof Jim Thomason.

Ashlee's project, in conjunction with the Weir Group, will investigate utilisation of fibre reinforced composites in highly corrosive mediums.

In his work Mariusz will carry out fundamental research aimed at investigating the micro- and macro-mechanics of fibre reinforced composites in order to derive multiscale analysis techniques.

Simona continues previous ACG research of aerogel composites; her work will look at existing Resorcinol-Formaldehyde (RF) aerogels in order to investigate their mechanical and insulation properties and to understand how to further improve them.

David's project, supported by wind turbine supplier Suzlon, will investigate a micro-mechanical measurement methodology for assessing the influence of processing variables and fibre sizing on interphase in composites for wind turbine applications.
