Engineering the Future for GirlsAbout the programme

The Rationale

Evidence shows that there is poor gender balance within most engineering degree courses in the UK. The undergraduate intake statistics are significantly skewed towards male undergraduates, with some courses having less than 10% female students. The main reason for this is that many young females see science and engineering subjects as being male orientated – and hence ‘not for them’.

2023 Programme

We were delighted to be able to offer our 2023 programme in person again at the University of Strathclyde:

  • the programme took place at the University of Strathclyde from Monday 5th to Thursday 8th June 2023. Each day the programme ran from 09.30 am to 3.00 pm, with a break for lunch
  • 100 places were available to all S3 girls in Scottish schools
  • participants spent four days on the University of Strathclyde campus and heard from staff at the University and colleagues from BAM Nuttall, the Weir Group and West Fraser who provided an insight into studying and working in the field of engineering. They also took part in a number of practical activities organised by University of Strathclyde staff and engineers
  • the programme ran over four days and pupils were advised in advance they had to commit to attending all four days
  • as the programme ran during school hours, pupils were advised to consult their teacher with regards to having time away from normal studies
  • this was not a residential programme, however, travel expenses of up to £300 were able to be claimed per successful pupil.
