Equality Champion

The University’s Associate Principal (Social Inclusion) Professor Douglas Brodie is the Equality and Diversity Champion.

His role is to advocate the equality agenda and strategy and support the Equality and Diversity Manager in developing and implementing the best policy and practice on campus.

Professor Brodie is the Convener of the University Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The membership includes representatives from Faculties, Professional Services and Strathclyde Students' Union.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee

The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (EDIC) is a University Committee overseeing the University’s compliance with its equality and diversity obligations, most recently set out within the Equality Act 2010.

Strathclyde University celebrates the diversity and inclusion of our socially progressive University community and is committed to raising awareness of and promoting opportunities for equality and diversity.

The Committee is convened by Professor Douglas Brodie, Associate Principal, Social Inclusion and meets formally three times a year.

Gender Equality Steering Group

The role of the Gender Equality Steering Group is to help promote and advance gender equality within the University’s staff and student populations and specifically to oversee progress against the University’s Athena SWAN Action Plan and student Gender Action Plan.

The Committee is convened by the Equality and Diversity Manager and meets formally three times a year.

Race Equality Steering Group

The role of the Race Equality Steering Group (RESG) is to advocate for and work to ensure an inclusive, welcoming and equitable working and learning environment for Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) students and staff. The RESG is Chaired by Professor Churnjeet Mahn, Deputy Associate Principal and sponsored by Professor Douglas Brodie, Associate Principal for Social Inclusion. 

RESG works to actively understand and improve educational and employment experiences and outcomes for BAME and staff through our culture, structures, processes, and learning and teaching. 

RESG was formed in 2023,  and meets 3 times per year (with more frequent meetings of sub-groups). The RESG membership is comprised of representatives from across the University. RESG reports to the University’s central Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (EDIC) 

The RESG is the successor of the Race Equality Working Group (REWG) convened from 2020 to 2022. In the short to medium term, the RESG is providing oversight to the University's implementation of the REWG recommendations and leading the University’s work towards Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter.

WISE Committee

The WISE committee, Women in Science and Engineering, was formed in early 2010 to collect and address some issues commonly faced by female academics across the various engineering departments. This was expanded to include the Faculty of Science in 2020.
