Senate has overall responsibility for determining the shape of the academic year. The University’s academic year structure was approved by Senate in November 2015, the current structure being implemented from academic year 2016/17.

Additional Information for Tier 4 Visa Students
Students who are Tier 4 visa holders are entitled to work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full time during University vacations in line with the parameters of a Tier 4 visa. Please note that for these purposes, the summer vacation runs from the end of semester 2 to the beginning of semester 1 in the following academic year.
Undergraduate Tier 4 students are therefore entitled to work full time during the Christmas, spring and summer University vacations.
Postgraduate Masters Tier 4 students are not on vacation from their course during the summer University vacation and therefore, within the restrictions of the Tier 4 visa, are not entitled to work more than 20 hours per week during this period, but are entitled to work full time during Christmas and spring University vacations.
MRes, MPhil and PhD Tier 4 students undertaking research are not regarded as being on vacation from their course of study during the spring and summer University vacations and therefore are not entitled to work more than 20 hours per week during this period.
All Tier 4 students, however, can work full-time for up to 4 months after the official end date of their course (as indicated on PEGASUS as 'completed') until their visa expires.
