Careers ServiceEmploying student interns

Interested in hiring an intern?

Employing a student intern can be a worthwhile and rewarding experience.

Create a job description and person specification

The first step will be to create a job description and person specification. There is information on the Strathclyde website about creating job adverts.

Advertise the role

Decide how long to advertise the role (usually two weeks) and how you want applicants to apply. You'll then need to advertise it via the Careers Service vacancy system.

Shortlist candidates

After the closing date, you must shortlist candidates and invite them to interview.

Issue contract

You would then liaise with your HR contact to draft and issue the contract of employment.

Let unsuccessful candidates know

Once the successful candidate has accepted your offer, let the other interviewees know the outcome as soon as possible. Offer them an opportunity to receive feedback on their interview.

Employing interns FAQs

As a Glasgow Living Wage employer, we must pay this as a minimum. Total costs of employing staff, including NI and pension contributions, can be found on the Finance Directorate pages.

It's up to you to decide on the work pattern. It's advisable to have some flexibility that you can discuss with the successful candidate.
