Guide to employing student interns

Employing a student intern can be a worthwhile and rewarding experience.

  • First step will be to create a job description and person specification. There is information on the Strathclyde website about creating job adverts
  • You will then need to advertise it via the Careers Service vacancy system
  • You will need to decide how long to advertise it for (usually two weeks) and how you want applicants to apply
  • After the closing date you will need to shortlist candidates and invite them to interview
  • You would then liaise with your HR contact to draft and issue the contract of employment.
  • Once the successful candidate has accepted your offer it is good practice to let the other interviewees know the outcome as soon as possible and to offer them an opportunity to receive feedback on their interview
  • It is up to you to decide on the work pattern and probably advisable to have some flexibility which you can discuss with the successful candidate.
