The Strathclyde Supervisor Development Programme is aimed at anyone involved in postgraduate research supervision at Strathclyde. The courses can be used to complete initial Supervisor Training or to support your continuing development as a supervisor throughout your career.
The programme consists of the following components:
- Core Workshops
- Workshops that address Day to Day Supervision Skills
- Workshops that address Academic Writing and the Viva Voice Exam
As well as supporting staff to become First or Second Supervisors at Strathclyde, these workshops are open to any member of staff and experienced supervisors are very welcome.
The workshops can also be used as refresher training. Please contact pgrsupervisor-development@strath.ac.uk
Becoming a First or Second Supervisor
The programme has been developed to allow participants to choose the combination of workshops that best suits their developmental needs. If you are using the programme to become a first or second supervisor, you will need to need to complete a total of 5 workshops from the Supervisor Development Programme plus a reflective presentation, all within 18 months to complete your Supervisor Training.
Enrol on the MyPlace class to register for the programme and track your progress.
If you have previously undertaken Supervisor Training at another University we may be able to offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) towards this programme. Please complete the Recognition of Prior Learning Form and send it to pgrsupervisor-development@strath.ac.uk
If you feel you should be exempt from this programme please complete the Exemption Form and send it to pgrsupervisor-development@strath.ac.uk
Registering as a First Supervisor
If you wish to be added to the list of staff eligible to act as First Supervisors (often described as being 'on the list') you will need to:
- Register on the Strathclyde Supervisor Development Programme by enrolling on the Myplace class
- Indicate on the Myplace site that you wish to be added to the list of staff eligible to act as First Supervisors
- Attend the Core Workshop ‘Becoming a Strathclyde Supervisor’
You will be added to the list of staff eligible to act as First Supervisors on completion of the Core Workshop ‘Becoming a Strathclyde Supervisor’. To remain on the list, you must complete your Supervisor Training within 18 months.

Reflective Presentation
To complete First or Second Supervisor Training you are required to take part in a reflective presentation session after completing the fice workshops. During this session you will present:
EITHER a 20 minute reflective account of your learning from the programme, how you have applied this to your own experiences of supervising a doctoral student during the programme and how your learning will continue to shape your supervisory practices in future.
“OR a 20 minute reflective account of your learning from the programme, how this applies to a case study and how your learning will shape your supervisory practices in future.”

What about SPARK?
You can also gain SPARK credits by completing the Strathclyde Supervisor Development Programme ‘Supervisor Training’ plus additional assignments reflecting upon the academic literature related to supervision. These credits will be awarded under the ‘Supervising Postgraduate Research’ class code.
