International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)

We have an ongoing collaboration with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). IIED Senior Research Dr Lorenzo Cotula is on the Advisory Board of the BeneLex project and is a Visiting Professor to SCELG. In turn, SCELG researchers have participated in IIED expert meetings. In April 2016, Elisa Morgera and Daniela Diz were invited to contribute to an IIED expert meeting on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to develop a working definition, principles and an analytical framework for the concept of "Leave No One Behind," including on the basis of international law research on fair and equitable benefit-sharing in the fisheries sector.  In November 2015, Elisa Morgera was invited to contribute to an IIED expert workshop on developing an equity framework for protected area governance, which focused on how to better understand and promote equitable protected area governance and how to measure progress towards achieving that end, and to identify opportunities for engaging in key international processes.

Furthermore, SCELG has been co-producing with IIED policy briefs targeted to representatives of Least Developed Countries participating in UN negotiations on a new international instrument on marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, based on BENELEX research. The policy briefs are also available in French and concern: 1) fair and equitable benefit-sharing from the use of marine genetic resources; and 2) benefit-sharing dimensions of capacity building and technology transfer.
