Our research: Chemical & process engineeringScholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL)

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research cluster is dedicated to advancing educational research and scholarship in teaching and learning, with a strong emphasis on teaching innovation, inclusivity, and curriculum development.

The key strands of activity within the SoTL research cluster are:

  • module, programme, and curriculum development
  • collaborative learning, including group work, peer assessment, and the development of student agency
  • opportunities and challenges of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), and their impact on students (learning, critical thinking, creativity, engagement), lecturers (teaching methods, assessment) and graduates/engineering professionals
  • Integrating experiential learning through integrating real-world problems, case studies and mini-projects within modules
  • mechanisms for widening access and fostering equity in higher education
  • online teaching and learning
  • transnational education

The SoTL cluster offers a space where teaching and academic staff co-create frameworks that respond to emerging educational needs. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), the cluster addresses targets related to inclusive and equitable access, lifelong learning, and the development of resilient, future-ready graduates.

What my students should learn most and how to best support that learning in this field are determined by my pedagogical focus. This entails giving top priority to objectives like encouraging inquiry-based learning, demonstrating proficiency in fundamental skills, and promoting the growth of critical thinking. Sustaining this unwavering focus is essential because it ensures that every instructional decision I make, from lesson planning to assessment, is completely in line with and motivated by this goal.

My research interest is in chemical engineering curriculum development specifically focusing on how to effectively integrate a sustainability-informed philosophy throughout the curriculum, rather than treating it as a separate module. I am also interested in investigating how to effectively integrate project-based learning within the different modules in the chemical engineering curriculum.
