Forensic Medical Science Evening Seminar Series

Enhance your forensic medical knowledge with this part-time, 30-week course hosted by the Centre for Forensic Science at Strathclyde. Now updated and expanded, this course is the successor to one run for many years at the University of Glasgow, and covers a broad range of topics from the fields of forensic science, forensic medicine, and the law.

Forensic Biology

Forensic genetics for legal professionals

This course covers the basics of DNA evidence, its usage and limitations, and how its level of certainty is conveyed through expert opinions. It provides an overview of direct kinship applications and the use of lineage DNA as evidence.

This course covers technology advancements that allow the gathering of more information from less material. Provides an overview of novel methods used for intelligence purposes, information of non-human identification applications, and general challenges and pitfalls of novel technologies.

Forensic Genomics for Forensic Scientists

Provides a general overview of the classical methods of laboratory analysis, interpretation of results, and reporting.

This course provides a general overview of novel technologies and methods of DNA analysis, including an introduction to data analysis from next-generation sequencing and the available data analysis tools and techniques. The course also considers the challenges and pitfalls of novel technologies.

Specialist genomics courses and trainings

This is a custom modular hands-on course to suit individual training needs, with various workflows on the MiSeq/MiSeq FGx platform.

This is custom modular training to suit individual needs for data processing and advanced data analysis from the MiSeq/MiSeq FGx and the S5 platforms.

This is a specialist course on a customisable scale, designed to provide an introduction to the use of this novel investigative tool.

Custom requests are accommodated on an individual basis for short courses and training within the main topic of forensic genetics and genomics.

Requests for collaboration on a small to international scale are welcome in the fields of forensic genetics and genomics and research and development of laboratory and data analysis investigative tools.

Forensic Chemistry

Online courses

Participants attending online courses will be awarded a certificate counting towards their annual CPD requirement.

This course is a five-module workshop covering an introduction to the field, toxicology & alcohol, firearms, drugs of abuse, and courtroom testimony. Participants will improve and expand their own understanding as it relates to their job role; this course is intended to provide a high-level view of forensic chemistry as a whole. No previous scientific, legal, or law enforcement training is required.

This course has been developed for scientists and law enforcement who may be exposed to illicit drug labs in the field. Training includes proper protective equipment, hazardous materials, sampling, and case studies.

This course takes an in-depth look at the history of illicit drugs and their ever-changing role in society.

This is a comprehensive overview of novel psychoactive substances and synthetic drugs, with an emphasis on methods of laboratory analysis.

This course has been developed specifically for those working in law enforcement to enhance their recognition and understanding of various smuggling techniques.

 

A course for forensic toxicologists that discusses the polypharmacy situation in Europe as well as pharmacokinetics.

A case-study-based course for those working in fields related to fire investigation. This course covers types of evidence uncovered, examination of electrical and explosive residues, combustion characteristics, and court testimony.

On-site training courses

Participants attending on-site courses will be awarded a certificate counting towards their annual CPD requirement.

This course will build upon the online, theory-based workshop on illicit drug labs with hands-on practical experience. Participants will work through a mock crime lab to gain a greater understanding of the hazards involved at the scene and experience donning/doffing of PPE.

A course designed for practicing forensic scientists with 0-2 years experience in the laboratory. The course will cover drug evidence analysis using various instrumentation including FTIR, GC/FID, GC-MS, and HPLC alongside colour and immunoassay tests. A special focus will be on the analysis of drugs commonly encountered in the UK such as opioids and synthetic opioids, benzodiazepines, cocaine, and amphetamines.

Enhance your forensic medical knowledge with this part-time, 30-week course hosted by the Centre for Forensic Science at Strathclyde. Now updated and expanded, this course is the successor to one run for many years at the University of Glasgow, and covers a broad range of topics from the fields of forensic science, forensic medicine, and the law.

Satisfactory completion of the full course will allow the participant to sit for the Diploma in Forensic Medical Sciences (DipFMS), an examination set by the Society of Apothecaries in London. If preferred, participants can choose to attend only the science, legal, and/or medical lectures (single instruction block). Lectures will rotate among the instruction blocks over the entire 30-week duration.
