Our research spans a wide range of topics from analytical chemistry to materials science and from biological chemistry to theoretical chemistry.
We are part of WestCHEM, the joint research school of the University of Strathclyde and the University of Glasgow, with whom we work on many areas of chemistry research.
Areas of research

Bionanotechnology & analytical chemistry
We focus on the application of nanoscience to solve a range of biological problems related to healthcare. Expertise in analytical techniques also underpins research interests in environmental, conservation science and controlling industrial processes.

Catalysis & synthesis
Interests range from fundamental concepts in mechanistic chemistry to the application of new technology in projects of commercial and technological relevance. In addition, a significant skill set in physical organic chemistry allows us to develop our science at the highest level.

Chemical biology & medicinal chemistry
Our staff’s interests extend from the delivery of chemical tools to underpin and advance basic biology to the application of knowledge in drug discovery.

Materials & computational chemistry
We have a strong emphasis on applied, multidisciplinary projects with activities encompassing inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry for the development of functional materials and devices. This is supported by substantial characterisation facilities and pioneering research into structure-property relationships.

Forensic science
Our Centre for Forensic Science is recognised for its excellence in forensic education, research and practice.

Education, Research and Scholarship
Effective approaches to teaching and learning in The Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry (PAC) are supported by nationally and internationally recognised education research and scholarship (ERS).
The PAC:ERS research theme is composed of staff with a range of research interests, from diagnosing common misconceptions in learning, to science communication.
