Maths Week Activities

We were delighted to take part in Maths Week Scotland 2018.  Here at Strathclyde, we had a full programme of activities that took place across the week to celebrate!  We visited various schools in the community to show how fun maths can be and encouraged students to engage more with mathematics.

Monday 10th September

Cryptography Activity - the Strathclyde University Strath Science Scouts ran our new Cryptography activity to S1 pupils from Shawlands Academy. More from Strath Science Scouts

The UK Mathematics Trust delivered Mathematical Circles sessions hosted by the University of Strathclyde for young people in S3 from local schools. The sessions promoted mathematical thinking and provided an opportunity for participants to meet other students who enjoy mathematics.  Students discovered how interesting maths can be by taking part in our Infectious Disease activity!

Tuesday 11th September

Murder Mystery Activity - The Strath Science Scouts ran an interactive workshop for P6 & P7 pupils in Busby Primary School, East Renfrewshire. Pupils solved mathematical and chemistry clues to solve the murder of a teacher!  

Real Life Mathemetics - We visited Turnbull High School in Bishopbriggs to give a talk to Advanced Higher Mathematics students on how maths is used in real life.

Cryptography Activity - The Strath Science Scouts visited St Andrew's and St Bride's High School in East Kilbride to run our new Cryptography activity with S3 students.

Wednesday 12th September

Our Lady's High School Inter-Authority Conference - the Strath Science Scouts brought mathematics to life for these higher students who discovered the mathematics of infectious diseases!

We also visited Williamwood High School in East Renfrewshire to give talks about studying mathematics at University, along with Prof. Adam McBride.

Thursday 13th September

St Benedict's High School, Renfrewshire – Cryptography Activity. The Strathclyde University Strath Science Scouts ran our new Cryptography activity with S3 and S5/6 pupils.  

We also visited St Joseph's Primary School in Cardowan to run some fun maths stall activities with P7 pupils.

Friday 14th September

Our Lady's High School - the Strath Science Scouts brought mathematics to life for higher students who discovered the mathematics of infectious diseases and also took part in our new Cryptography activity.

We also ran our new Cryptography activity with S1 pupils from St Andrew's High School in Glasgow.
