Department of Physics Equality, Diversity and Inclusion stories

Ms Miraidh Reid
Undergraduate student, BSc Physics
The field of physics is often lacking in diversity, with a distinct underrepresentation of woman, amongst many other minority backgrounds. I have at times felt the weight of this imbalance, worried that I may not have access to equal opportunities, recognition and support as my peers. However, my experience in the physics department has reassured me that progress is being made towards greater inclusivity.
Whilst working within the Institute of Photonics on my final year project, I was encouraged by my supervisors to apply for Optica’s Women Scholar award, supporting the next generation of women leaders in optics and photonics. Being chosen as a recipient has not only recognised and validated my hard work and dedication throughout my studies but has also provided me with access to a global network of mentors, as well as opportunities to further my academic and professional growth such as completing specialized training courses and attending conferences.
Beyond this, the department has played a crucial role in helping me achieve my career aspirations of undertaking a PhD. My supervisors have supported me in this goal by encouraging me to apply for scholarships and research opportunities. Their guidance and reassurance in my potential led to me receiving a position at the Institute of Photonics with the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Applied Quantum Technologies, where I will soon begin my PhD.
Despite being part of an underrepresented group, the encouragement I have received within the department has reassured me that I will be valued and respected as I progress in my career. I look forward to being part of a department that is actively working towards providing an inclusive, supportive environment for all.
