Department of PhysicsEquality, Diversity and Inclusion stories

Attending CUWiP 2024 in Limerick was an inspiring experience that deepened our passion for physics and connected us to a wider scientific community. It was refreshing to learn in a pressure-free environment, focusing on the bigger picture and real-world applications. One of the most impactful aspects was meeting women in physics—students, researchers, and professionals—whose diverse career paths were truly motivating.
The conference also reassured us that struggling with academic challenges is normal. A speaker asked,” Have you ever taken a physics exam without fully understanding the subject? Have you ever just passed a test without feeling confident in the material?”. She explained that this is completely normal and that true understanding develops over time. This resonated with us—when we first studied quantum mechanics, it felt abstract and overwhelming. But now, in our third year, those same concepts are finally starting to make sense.
Beyond academics, CUWiP allowed us to explore a new city, visit a different university, and experience memorable moments like the medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle, where traditional music and storytelling made it feel like stepping back in time.
We’re deeply grateful to the University of Strathclyde’s Physics Department for giving us this opportunity and for their financial support, which made it all possible.
