LGBTQ+ Allyship Pilot Scheme

The Physics Department and the EDI committee are introducing an LGBTQ+ allyship scheme for the 25/26 academic year.

Ally: someone who advocates alongside marginalised communities to empower their voices and together spread knowledge, awareness, respect, and to challenge prejudice. Allies show active and visible support.

Many members of the physics department already act as allies for LGBTQ+ students and staff – this scheme is meant to increase visibility and make it easier for new students and staff to find support.

Physics Department LGBTQ+ Allies are:

  • Knowledgeable about university resources: they will help you find LGBTQ+ resources.
  • Committed to listening to and learning from LGBTQ+ members of our community: they will provide a safe place and friendly ear to discuss LGBTQ+ issues.
  • Committed to educating themselves about current LGBTQ+ challenges and experience.
  • Advocates: they will challenge prejudice and help to educate the rest of the physics department regarding LGBTQ+ issues.

Physics Department LGBTQ+ Allies are not:

  • Therapists: allies can signpost to resources but are not trained to provide counselling.
