Why did you choose to study at the University of Strathclyde?
I wanted a modern, research-led approach to genealogy, and Strathclyde offered exactly that. The programme’s strong academic foundation and focus on professional standards immediately appealed to me. The fully online, part-time format, along with a lot of flexibility around deadlines, made it possible to balance study with family life, and even with ongoing health commitments.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
The Diploma was my favourite stage of the programme, as it expanded my skills through in-depth study and also gave me a broad understanding of international sources. In addition, it allowed me to develop specialist interests: I completed my own projects on DNA genealogy, transported convicts, and the British Merchant Service, areas I enjoyed so much that they have since become central to my professional specialisms. I also loved my dissertation project, which traced Titanic families through the decades following the disaster of 1912. I found that the whole experience has significantly improved my life and my confidence overall.
What advice would you give to a prospective student coming to study your course?
Organisation and time management are key: plan carefully to balance other commitments. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or extensions if life gets in the way; the staff are very understanding.
What specialist knowledge or professional skills have you developed studying your course?
Through the course I developed skills in genealogical research, DNA analysis, palaeography, and archival work, as well as expertise across all the major online genealogy platforms. I also gained a much stronger understanding of how to locate, assess, and use different sources effectively. My abilities are now far beyond what they were before I started at Strathclyde.
How is your course helping to enhance your current career and prepare you for your future career?
Being able to claim an MSc with Distinction in Genealogy from Strathclyde carries great respect within the field and has given me immediate professional credibility, as well as enabling me to register as a Qualified Genealogist (QG). Through the course, I also became part of a thriving professional network that continues to support and inspire me.
What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?
I continue to run my professional genealogy business All About Ancestors (https://allaboutancestors.com). I am now also working with major media organisations within the industry - opportunities that the credibility of holding the MSc from Strathclyde has helped me to successfully pursue.
Any final points, or words of wisdom?
