Strathclyde Institute for Genealogical StudiesGenetic Genealogy Research Network

Strathclyde's Genealogy Research Network launched in January 2022 and is a space for people to share their current research and find out about others doing similar work in order to facilitate collaborative projects.

Following the success of this endeavour, we established a similar initiative for genetic genealogy in the summer of 2025. The Genetic Genealogy Research Network is run along similar lines. The goals of the group are to share current research projects related to genetic genealogy, and may include any of the following topics:

  • Working with clusters – creation, analysis, interpretation, & conclusions
  • Developing tools for visualisation, handling, analysis, & interpretation of DNA data, and presentation of results
  • Pedigree reconstruction methods (e.g. Bonsai)
  • Applications of AI to genetic genealogy
  • FIGG, Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy
  • Ancient DNA & reconstructing ancient relationships
  • Ethics, Legal Issues
  • Y-DNA & surname / clan / lineage research (including indigenous peoples)

Participants join us from a range of disciplines and interests including genetics, anthropology, forensic science, history, law and genealogy and include academics, PhD students, industry representatives, and working genetic genealogists. We welcome as members people who are actively involved in research that incorporates genetic genealogy and plan to publish their research in a scientific journal, are employed as genetic genealogists, or are studying genetic genealogy as part of a graduate level course.

Meetings are held online three to four times a year with a format of one or two short (15-20 minutes) presentations from individuals on their current work followed by an informal discussion where we can give updates on current research projects in an informal manner and spark ideas!
