Why did you choose the University of Strathclyde MSc in Safety & Risk Management?

I was having a tough time deciding which qualification to pursue as a Health and Safety professional. After doing some research, I came across the Safety and Risk Management course programs at the University of Strathclyde. I also heard great things about the university from friends. At first, I was interested in the postgraduate certificate, but in 2018, the course was changed to a 3-year MSc program. I really liked the idea that I would receive a certificate upon completion of each year, so I decided to go for the full master’s program. Luckily, the MSc program is available online at a reasonable cost.

What has been your experience of the course to date?

I began my course at the end of 2018 with the goal of graduating by 2021. The first year was a steep learning curve and a big adjustment as I balanced being a student with working full-time. I was fortunate to have great tutors and program leaders who supported me, especially during personal challenges and the impact of COVID, which led to long work hours for HSE professionals. In the second year, I had to withdraw from the course, but my program leader at the time provided support for my mental health and guided me on my options. Taking a break to focus on work during COVID and prioritize my mental health was excellent advice. I returned to complete my thesis in 2023. Throughout the course, I gained a wealth of knowledge that significantly benefited my job. I particularly enjoyed the case studies from different industries, as they provided valuable insights. My thesis supervisor was exceptional, offering guidance and unwavering positivity, which gave me the confidence to see the project through. He also provided excellent advice while being considerate of my work commitments, which I found very supportive and kind. Now that I have officially completed and passed my MSc, I am looking forward to my graduation ceremony in November 2024. Although it took longer than I expected, it was definitely worth the investment.

Would you recommend the programme to other people…and why?

The MSc in Safety and Risk Management is a fantastic program! It not only provides valuable insights into various industries but also helps refine your strategic approach at an executive level. It brings significant value and knowledge to the field and has definitely improved the quality of my work. I would absolutely recommend this program to HSE professionals who are looking to take their expertise to the next level.

What are your career ambitions for the future?

As a regional head, achieving this degree has not only elevated my qualifications but has also instilled in me the confidence and finesse to excel as a health and safety leader. I aspire to leverage these credentials and my experience to attain future Global or C-level positions.
