Overview
Decision-making in healthcare and healthcare policy typically requires sound data and an understanding of causal mechanisms, yet it grapples with data insufficiency, biases, limited knowledge of causal mechanisms, and demand for swift decisions. Stakeholders often rely on expert opinions and assumptions for guidance, bypassing scientific methodologies. This PhD program aims to bridge these gaps by developing and applying scientific methods that integrate expert input and decision modelling.Eligibility
For entry onto our PhD programme we look for a first-class or upper second-class UK Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in a relevant business or social science related subject. We also normally expect a Masters’ degree in a relevant subject, or overseas equivalent. When reviewing your academic achievements, we're particularly interested in grades which relate to independent research (for example, your research project or dissertation).

Decision-making in healthcare and healthcare policy typically requires sound data and an understanding of causal mechanisms, yet it frequently grapples with data insufficiency, biases, limited knowledge of causal mechanisms, and demand for swift decisions. Stakeholders, such as decision-makers and modellers, often rely on expert opinions and assumptions for guidance, bypassing scientific methodologies. This PhD program aims to bridge these gaps by developing and applying scientific methods that integrate expert input and decision modelling or evidence synthesis for informed decision-making.
Research questions could be related to elicitation of unknown parameters, causal mechanism and model structures, improving evidence synthesis, or others.
The Department has been conducting extensive work in this area. In particular, see the profile pages for Dr Abigail Colson, and also some work done by Dr Itamar Megiddo and Prof Alec Morton.
