Project Details

The early years form a critical period for promoting healthy development and reducing health inequalities. Movement plays a key role in early childhood development with evidence supporting the physical, cognitive and socio-emotional benefits of 24-hour movement behaviours—physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep. Moreover, families can play an important role in supporting young children’s holistic development and providing them opportunities to move.

The Active Healthy Families project aims to examine the 24-hour movement behaviours and development outcomes of young children and the role of parenting practices and family home environments in Scotland. The project will also explore parents/caregivers’ perceptions of supporting movement behaviours. The PhD student will work with young children and their families, adopting both quantitative (e.g., questionnaires) and qualitative (e.g., focus group interviews) methods.

Further information

This interdisciplinary project is a collaboration between the Strathclyde Institute of Education, the Department of Psychological Sciences and Health, and the Department of Social Work and Social Policy focusing on better supporting young children’s health and development.

Part-time study is available for home students only.
