Overview
Excellent opportunity to work with Rolls-Royce plc, the University of Strathclyde and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) on quantifying particulates in aerospace fluids non-destructively using a cutting-edge technology. We offer more than 20% stipend top up to the standard UKRI stipend (£18,622).Eligibility
Degree in chemistry, physics, material science, chemical engineering, or similar
Project Details
With the continuous need for technologies to deliver on sustainability commitments and enable future products, this project will investigate the use of non-destructive quantification of particulates in aerospace fluids with the capability to monitor fluids such as hydrocarbons, including fuels & oils, and air for particulates to enable the necessary understanding of the composition of those fluids. This will include the use of cutting-edge terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and the development of inverse scattering models to identify and quantify sediments in particulates in aerospace fluids.
Environment
The PhD student will be primarily based at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington with access to cutting-edge EPSRC THz Facility. NPL is a world-leading centre of excellence that provides cutting-edge measurement science, engineering and technology to underpin prosperity and quality of life in the UK. The student will also have access to a dedicated national network of world-class, state-of-the-art facilities at the University of Strathclyde, including the £34M UK-RPIF funded CMAC National Facility in the Technology and Innovation Centre at Strathclyde. It houses suites of state-of-the-art process analytics, advanced automation, control and advanced characterisation techniques.
The student will be co-supervised by Rolls-Royce who is one of the world's leading industrial technology companies, and a global business providing integrated power systems for use on land, at sea and in the air. The company pioneers cutting-edge technologies to deliver increasingly clean, safe and competitive solutions to meet our planet’s vital power needs. Their Civil Aerospace business is a major manufacturer of aero engines for large commercial aircraft, regional jet, and business aviation markets. Their Defence business provides power and propulsion systems around the world, across Air, Land and Sea. The business uses its engineering expertise, in-depth knowledge, and capabilities to provide through-life support solutions for its global customers. Their technology will play a fundamental role in enabling the transition to a low carbon global economy.
Further information
We are looking for motivated candidates with a background in chemistry, physics, material science, chemical engineering, or similar, to undertake this project. You will need to have a passion for multidisciplinary research, and collaboration with industrial stakeholders.
The offered studentships cover home tuition fees, research/training costs and provide a monthly stipend for 4 years. Candidates eligible for home fees are UK nationals, Irish nationals, applicants with a settled or pre-settled status in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme, and applicants with indefinite leave to remain in the UK. We also welcome applications from EU or international candidates with the potential to apply for a scholarship that covers the difference between Home and International Fees.
The studentship is based on home fees but international candidates can be considered.
