The University of Strathclyde has been ranked among the UK’s top ten universities in the Sunday Times University Guide 2027 for the first time.
Strathclyde has climbed to nine in the prestigious league table, a rise of two places from 11th last year.
As well as climbing the main league table, Strathclyde has extended its lead within individual subject tables, topping them five times – twice more than last year – in accounting and finance, communication and media studies, creative writing, pharmacology and pharmacy, and social work.
Strathclyde was also voted Scottish university of the year runner up for its ‘exceptional performance, academic vision, and sustained excellence during a transformative era for higher education.’
Top ten
In addition, the University was also in the top ten for 18 other subjects, including:
- Politics and international relations; 2nd in the UK and 1st in Scotland
- Physics and astronomy; 3rd in the UK, and 2nd in Scotland
- Bioengineering and biomedical engineering: joint 4th in the UK and 1st in Scotland
- Business, management and marketing: 5th in the UK & 2nd in Scotland
- Law: 6th in the UK and 3rd in Scotland
The University’s Principal & Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen McArthur, said: “This is a tremendous achievement and recognition of the quality of Strathclyde’s education, research and innovation.
The results reflect excellence across the breadth of the University and provide further evidence of the strength of our distinctive approach.
“At a time of significant change and challenge across higher education, these results are a welcome recognition of the quality, ambition and collective effort found throughout Strathclyde.”
The Guide highlights innovations including the Advanced Net Zero Innovation Centre, an ambitious national facility launched to support the UK’s transition to a net zero economy, drawing on the University’s established strengths in power networks and advanced manufacturing.
Socially progressive
It also credits ‘a stream of socially progressive developments’, including Strathclyde gaining University of Sanctuary status, and its pioneering suicide prevention strategy which includes Scotland’s first full-time suicide project co-ordinator at a university.
The rating follows a series of strong performances for the University in national rankings, including in the Guardian University Guide 2027 where Strathclyde rose two places from 19th to 17th in the UK, with eight subjects placed in the UK top ten.
Strathclyde was also named Research University of the Year in the Daily Mail University Guide 2027.
Positive outcomes
In the same guide, the University also retained its joint sixth position in the UK – and remained first in Scotland and one of only two Scottish institutions in the UK top 10.
The University was placed second in Scotland for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey and joint first in Scotland for graduate positive outcomes.
Strathclyde also climbed 21 places to joint 230th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, putting it among the top 15% of ranked institutions worldwide and in the top 30 in the UK.
