Women at Strathclyde

It's International Women's Day! To celebrate, we've pulled together some of our amazing women at Strathclyde.

Find out more about all the fantastic work they're doing.

Tea Tvrdeic, Urban Design (MSc)

"I was studying landscape architecture in Croatia then I decided that I wanted to work on a smaller scale and move on to masterplans - it's a good combination. In Croatia, I didn't have the opportunity to change course for my master degree, so I found my degree at Strathclyde and packed my things!"

Danai Chatzidimitriou, Business Analysis & Consulting student
[During my placement] I was responsible for modifying and using an existing forecasting model. This involved me in primary research, as well as utilising operational tools that were taught through class material.
Danai Chatzidimitriou
Business Analysis & Consulting (MSc)

Alex Wasalinko, Creative Writing student

"I'm doing a Masters in Creative Writing. It's a lot of independent research which I really love so I was able to build my own dissertation from past research experience and where I wanted to go with it."

Christine Dufés, Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Science

"We've developed some new seek-and-destroy nanomedicines...and we've demonstrated that intravenous administration of this nanomedicine led to the complete disappearance of 70% of one type of [prostate cancer] tumour, and 50% of another type of [prostate cancer] tumour."

Tran Ha Dung, Quantitative Finance (MSc) student
The course has exactly what I was looking for, equipping myself with knowledge in finance, math, computer sciences as well as a quantitative set of skills to become a future quant.
Tran Ha Dung
Quantitative Finance (MSc)

Ning, Finance (MSc)

"Before I came here I used to be an auditor for De Loitte. After that I wanted to work for a non-profit organisation, that's why I applied for the Security and Exchange Commission in Thailand."

Kylie Ang She Tou, Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing (MSc) student

"I got a very good job in Malaysia. I'm a Pharmacist, a registered Pharmacist. I can open my own pharmacy but I decided to come here to do my postgraduate study."

Aisha Abubakar sitting smiling at the camera
I have come to learn and explore new and interesting urban concepts, and this was quite exciting for me. However, the most exciting part is the opportunity to present a novel idea, of linking slums and city prosperity in an intervention agenda for slum and city improvement.

Aisha Abubakar, Architecture (PhD)
Praosiri Charusalaipong, Marketing postgraduate research student

Praosiri Charusalaipong, Marketing (PhD)

Araceli Venegas-Gomez, Physics (PhD)
I was always interested in science and physics, and later fell in love with Quantum Physics. At Strathclyde, I was impressed by the ratio of females studying Physics.

Araceli Venegas-Gomez, Physics (PhD)

Jennifer Wallace, Science graduate

"I started a new job in Project Management [after graduating], working for a company focused on clinical trials. It’s exciting to be out doing something new, building my career, continuing to learn and building on my academic experience."

Aurrora De Monte, Child & Youth Care Studies (MSc)

Not only have I increased my knowledge and analysis of theoretical foundations, but have also been challenged in my application of developmental theories, and encouraged to critically reflect on management and leadership in practice.

Maryam Omowunmi Abdul-Rahman nee Musah, Quantitative Finance (MSc)

"Studying an MSc in Quantitative Finance at the University of Strathclyde equipped me with analytical, problem solving, and data analysis skills using R programming language, Microsoft Excel and working on real-life projects, to position myself with the right skill set needed on the day-to-day basis of my job."

Reshma Ranjit, Cancer Therapies (MSc)

"Cancer was the course I always wanted to do. It includes care-targeted therapies and advanced biomedical research labs and quite a few new subjects which are included are drug discovery and targeted therapies."

Lisa McCann & Roma Maguire, Computer & Information Sciences

"The eSMART study is a European randomised controlled trial in five countries across Europe of our mobile phone-based remote patient monitoring system to support patients with cancer during their chemotherapy treatment."

Since I was young, I've always wanted to be a researcher. I was particularly fascinated at how this field combines the abstractness and beauty of mathematics with the possibility for real everyday life applications.
Maria Weikum

Caitlin Hykel, Forensic Science (MSc)

"I feel that my nine months here at Strathclyde have definitely been stepping stones towards a future career. I feel more prepared, I've done more techniques that I haven't done in my undergraduate degree that I can carry forward and use in the workplace."

Neha Jadhav

"Strathclyde truly is a place of useful learning."

Alice Tolworthy, Biomedical Engineering (BEng)

"The best thing about Strathclyde is how world class their research and facilities are. Your lecturers are all experts in their fields, but are also supportive and accessible if you need extra help or want to learn more."

german student julia loder

Julia Loder, Quantitative Finance (MSc)

"Studying here, the classes are much smaller [than in Germany]. There is good contact with the lecturers and the materials are more straightforward. Overall, I have a much greater learning experience here."

Jaylan Azer, Marketing (PhD)

"I was a bit nervous about the Scottish accent at first but I haven’t found it a problem at Strathclyde. Perhaps this is because the University has a lot of international students. I haven’t had any problems, and staff always say ‘stop us if you don’t understand anything.'"

Engineering the Future for Girls

"I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do when I came here but this has taught me what I'd like to do when I'm older."

Maria Sahayaselvan, Forensic Science (MSc)

"Personally, for me, the most important aspect of the course was the mock outdoor crime scene exercise where students were asked to collect evidence from the scene and come back to the laboratory and analyse the evidence."

Hinar Awad, international student, MSc Mechatronics & Automation
I fell in love with Mechatronics and Automation as a high school student when I went to a career event at my undergraduate university, the American University in Cairo (AUC). After studying the subject during my Bachelor degree, I decided that it is a very challenging field that needs to be further explored and studied.
Hinar Adel Awad, Mechatronics & Automation (MSc)

Nur Liyana Idzreen, Electrical Power Engineering (MSc)

"You can learn everything about power engineering and also have the business side of it. You can learn the economics part, what's the function of each thing, which roles and all that you didn't know before but you know it when you come here."

Voraluck Prakotmongkol, Prosthetics & Orthotics (MSc)

"After I graduate from Strathclyde, I would like to bring this kind of knowledge back to my country and think about what else we can do to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities in my country."
