Perfume Industry Disruptor
Burhan Patawala
Burhan Patawala is the co-founder of Bella Luxury Perfumes, a company creating non-alcoholic, sustainable fragrances designed for ethical consumers.
After struggling to use big brand fragrances due to skin sensitivity himself, Burhan was inspired to reimagine what perfume could be and to educate others about how alcohol-based formulas may not always be the best option for personal health, or the health of the environment.
Now nearing product launch, he’s combining ancient methods with modern values to make luxury more accessible and responsible.
Q&A
Q: What inspired you to create a non-alcoholic, sustainable perfume?
A: It started when we realized the problems with alcoholic perfumes—there were ethical concerns, sustainability issues, and health risks. That’s when we thought: why not create a non-alcoholic alternative?
Non-alcoholic perfumes have existed for centuries, but big industry players have shifted focus and made people forget. We wanted to bring back something more natural, effective, and high-quality—something better for your skin and overall health.
Q: What advice would you give to a Strathclyde student who has a goal but doesn’t know where to start?
A: Don’t think about the finish line. Just take the first step. When I started, I quit mentally every night. But every morning, I started again—because the next step matters more than the end goal.
Entrepreneurship is like growing up. You wouldn’t tell a five-year-old all the steps they’ll have to take to get a master’s degree. That would be overwhelming. Just focus on your version of “first grade,” then “second grade.” One step at a time.
