Mental Health Defender
John Conor Catterson
John Conor Catterson is the creator of the Promoting Healthy Decisions workshop, an initiative supporting postgraduate students in building value-driven resilience.
Drawing on his own mental health journey and experience as a PhD researcher in the Department of Design Manufacture & Engineering Management, John helps students move beyond survival mode by creating space for honest reflection, connection, and meaningful decision-making.
Q&A
Q: What does healthy resilience look like to you?
A: For me, healthy resilience is value-driven. It’s about staying committed to something that’s personally meaningful, whether that’s curiosity, community, contribution, or growth.
We often hear phrases like “never give up,” but that can be damaging. Sometimes, stepping away is the healthiest thing you can do. Resilience isn’t about blind persistence—it’s about honest reflection and making choices that align with who you are.
Q: How have the workshops been received so far?
A: I’m genuinely delighted. I started with modest hopes; if even one person walked away with a clearer sense of direction, or felt validated in their struggle, I’d have considered it a success.
But we’ve had most sessions fully booked, great attendance, and consistent feedback. Several people have reached out afterwards to say thank you, not just for the content, but for creating a space where they felt heard and seen. That, for me, is the most rewarding part.
