Roundtable on Agriculture after Brexit: Trade, Environment and Food Security implications

Abstract

The Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance is pleased to host an event on Agriculture after Brexit on 28th November. The event will seek to explore the implications of Brexit for agriculture in the UK, particularly as they pertain to trade, the environment and food security. The event will also seek to schematically analyse potential ways forward for the future of agriculture in the UK.  Two leading experts on agricultural law and policy - Professor Michael Cardwell (University of Leeds) and Professor Joe McMahon (University College Dublin)- will give presentations which will aim to identify key messages relevant to UK agriculture post-Brexit.

Professor Michael Cardwell

Michael Cardwell is Professor of Agricultural Law at the University of Leeds, having previously been a solicitor in practice with Burges Salmon, Bristol.  His research interests focus on the Common Agricultural Policy and agriculture in world trade, with publications including: The European Model of Agriculture (OUP, 2004); The Regulation of Genetically Modified Organisms: Comparative Approaches (OUP, 2010) (co-edited with Luc Bodiguel); and Research Handbook on EU Agriculture Law (Edward Elgar, 2015) (co-edited with Joe McMahon).  He also acted as Consultant Editor of the Agricultural Production and Marketing title (2008) in Halsbury's Laws of England and contributed to the Agriculture Report during the Balance of Competences Review.  In 2013, he was elected Assistant Delegate General of the European Council for Rural Law.

Professor Joe McMahon

Joe McMahon is Full Professor of Commercial Law at the UCD Sutherland School of Law having previously been a member of staff at Queens’ University Belfast, the University of Leicester and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His research interests focus on Agriculture in the WTO and the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy and Development Cooperation Policy. His publications include: European Agricultural Law (OUP, 2007); Research Handbook on the WTO Agriculture Agreement: New and Emerging Issues in International Agricultural Trade (Edward Elgar, 2012) (co-edited with Melaku Desta); and, Research Handbook on EU Agriculture Law (Edward Elgar, 2015) (co-edited with Michael Cardwell).  He is co-editor of the Journal of International Trade Law and Policy.
