SCELG partners with UN Division for the Law of the Sea (UNDOALOS)

February 2018: The Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance (SCELG) has been invited by the UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (UNDOALOS) to become one of the academic institutions that host fellows on the United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowship Programme for Human Development and Advancement of the Legal Order of the World’s Oceans, and on the Hamilton Shirley Amerashinghe Memorial Fellowship on the Law of the Sea.

Both fellowships attract government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing States who wish to advanced research in the field of ocean affairs to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The fellows spend three months at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and six months (July-December) at “prestigious participating host institutions” under the guidance of researchers that have “recognized in-depth expertise in the fellows' chosen field of study.”

Professor Morgera said: “We look forward to welcoming researchers with an interest in the role of law and governance of the ocean to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, in the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity, in marine spatial planning and integrated environmental assessments, and more generally in issues of equity and sustainability in the law of the sea.”
